We all see reporters and journalists in the field all the time on tv or social media, but do you really ever think about what they went through for this coverage or information? This makes the circumstances and the dangers they face feel distant and nonexistent. But what they face is very very real. While listening to the global news network Al Jazeera with my dad this morning, I learned of an American reporter who was killed in Ukraine yesterday. Hearing this didn't really resonate with me until a few hours later when I was scrolling monotonously through Tic Tock, and saw a video posted by NBC. It was an interview of another reporter in Ukraine who was explaining what had happened to the other recently deceased reporter who he had been with in the warzone. Hearing the horror and details of the incident being explained by the sobbing reporter really made me think about how little we know of the troubles reporters go through to bring us information.       As an endurance athlete on a daily basis I struggle with motivation and fighting my mind to get myself to go train or workout. While this isn't just endurance athletes that experience this no matter how much you love your sport it's very difficult to go and dedicate 3 hours to 7 some days to train and prepare yourself for events or races in my case. The mental toughness this requires to be able to be active in your sport for that long at a time is absurd. Losing focus could result in utter disappointment and time wasted because of loss of a result. A common mindset for many competitors in this world of endurance athletes is to leave it all out there and go as hard as possible even if you put yourself in greater danger. Working to get past training blocks and this mindset is mainly why I have chosen this topic so I might learn from my mistakes and help others not make the same ones I did, as well as learning more about the mental health aspect. 

  When I was about eight years old, my mom and dad told my sister and I that we would be going to another country for about a year in order for my dad to complete a sabbatical. This would mean we’d be moving to a completely unknown place with nobody we knew and no knowledge of the culture or language. But we didn’t care; we knew nothing of the difficulties it would bring. I was just a child excited to see a new place. Much to my distaste we chose to go to Ecuador. I was gunning to go to Thailand.  When we first arrived, I was still frustrated and aggravated about leaving my home and all my friends behind for a strange “smelly” place. All I could think is “this is not Thailand.” We started taking Spanish lessons from a man named Felipe. He was very kind hearted and I actually enjoyed the lessons because we would always just chat over a game of chess or cards. It was fun. He bribed me with a quick soccer match after the lesson.
